Temples – Sun Structures

1

The Rifles – None The Wiser

0

Interview mit The Orange Revival

0

Hey Guys , you are The Orange Revival,  a Sweden-based band! Could you quickly introduce yourself ?

63941_618045821546125_1507191525_nWe are a four piece band based in Sweden,  Andreas Axelsson plays the drums, Volter Hagman on bass, Christian Eldefors on organ/guitar, and Eric Strand on Guitar/vocals.

The first time I listened to your  records I thought  you were based in deep lost Texas/ U.S.A because of your gorgeous pschedelic sound! What are your influences?

Oh we listen to ,and get inspired by alot of bands.  But some bands who always will be a big inspiration are:  Velvet underground, Townes van zandt, Spacemen 3 , Brian jonestown massacre, Elliot smith, The Beatles , Stooges, Mc5 etc + many more.

When did you found ‘’The Orange Revival’’?

I recorded some songs in a small cottage at my parents yard including ¨How do you feel¨which was the first¨ official OR song I think.  And then I put together a band like 1 year later and started to play some shows around in sweden,  Then the lineup changed to what it is now and since then we have been over to the Us twice etc ,and we are working on a new album right now.

Does the swedish culture have an impact on your sound?

I guess it do. But I think the Weather has the biggest impact on our sound.  Usually its very dark and grey  but then once in a while the sun shows ,and then it feels like you are in paradise. and thats a good feeling.

I think the the mix of very short days here during winter + the Very long days during summer  + the cold weather  has some impact on our sound.

Your first Record „Black smoke Rising“ came out in 2011. Could you quickly explain how the song releasing process works? Do you guys firstly write the lyrics and then match the music?

Im not sure for how long we worked on the record. Some songs where new and some where old  and we didn’t really care to much about how it sounded, as long as it was alright. We didn’t have 20 songs and cut it down to 8. more likely 7 and cut it up to 8.  (Hehe)

It was fun to do it but It feels a bit like it was a demo to show what we did,  and not really a debut album.

In 2013 you released the single „Lying in the Sand“! What about a second record?

„Lying in the sand“ was released last spring and now we have recorded a new 7¨single which will be out this spring and then a new 12 this summer/fall. We are really exited about letting the people hear what it sounds like now.

Where do you guys usually record ? Is there a secret place in the wood?

We usually record by ourselves with some help from good friends, after that we mix it  and then finally  send it over for the mastering. Last 7¨was sent to the Uk and mastered by Pete Kember.

Which artists designed your album/single Covers? And what do they reflect?

I’m (Eric) have been doing our artwork. They reflect things that we like I guess.

Let’s get less serious now! Your band name is not very common and lets me think of a shaman’s altered state of consciousness! Why The Orange revival?

I love the color and it is a very strong color in many ways.

And last but not least ! What would you call a perfect Friday night?

Hmm.. maybe to come home and see a new Van on our driveway. Cause the one we had caught fire so we dont have one now. If anyone who reads this interview feels that they got some spare money.. we really need a van and if you buy us one we will come and play a private show at your place + stripe our car with your name on it!. (if you live in europe)   Cheers!

Real Lies

0

Interview mit Youth Club For Rich Kids

1

Hi guys, hope you’re fine! How about quick introduction of you and your band?

1452090_685601991474192_65929271_nHey man, It’s Conor and Alex from Maidenhead Indie 4 piece Youth Club For Rich Kids.

Why the name „Youth Club For Rich Kids“. Are you really that posh?

We are asked this question a lot, but no not really! We are pretty normal guys overall. The name is unique and sets us apart a bit, so that is why we went for it.

How would you describe your sound in a few words?

Relevant, Catchy, Youthful, Energetic.

„Such Romance“ maybe is my favourite track of you. What’s it about?

We wrote „Such Romance“ about 2 years ago now, so it’s awesome that people still listen to and talk about it today. Without giving too much away, I guess the song focuses on a failing relationship or friendship. It was an answer to Sinead O’Connor’s complete works.

What can we expect from you in near future? Maybe an album or an EP?

We’re planning on releasing an EP in 2014 which we’re excited about! Playing shows across the country is something we definitely want to do ,and branching out to Europe is also something we’ve spoken about.

The horrible Drum-and-Bass DJ „John B“ is the only thing, I could find out about Maidenhead. Could you quickly describe your hometown? How’s the music scene?

John B is crazy man! We had a guy from Maidenhead who went on the X-Factor which was funny. Maidenhead’s music scene is pretty dead at the moment especially for indie bands. This might be because kids just want to play video games all day, or are too angry to play mellow music like us.

You’ve recently posted a cover version of „Breezeblocks“, which is great by the way! Are Alt-J an inspiration for you guys?

Yeah Alt-J have inspired us in certain ways! We love the way they use so little to create such a euphoric sound. They have got it nailed.

I’ve seen a picture of you sitting in a football stadium. Are you into sports? What’s your favourite team?

We love sports! Football is our favourite sport. We (Alex and Conor) support Chelsea, Liam supports Spurs and Harry supports Fulham, so there is a real London rivalry running throughout the band. Alex is a massive fan of American sport and used to study basketball and American Football statistics 24/7. Harry once played Rugby when he was like 7 too, which apparently makes him an expert.

Let’s talk about less serious things. What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

I (Conor) accidentally chucked a drumstick at Alex’s girlfriends face, who i’d never met before. It was more tragic than funny now i think about it though!

The next question is a tough one. If you had one day to spend with an Artist, who would it be?

Conor: Left Brain from Mellowhype because people say we look a like

Alex: James Blake or Oliver Sim

Well guys, i’ve to admit that i quite like the newest song from Pitbull ft. Kesha (don’t hate me now). What are you musical guilty pleasures?

Haha we won’t hate you for that! Pitbull‘s kind of creepy though… personally I (Conor) really like Wiley and i guess i’m into Gwen Stefani as well. I know that Alex is a big fan of Eve and Harry likes any musical project involving Macaulay Culkin. As for Liam, a lot of what he listens to can be seen as pretty guilty.

And a very last one, what’d you call a perfect friday night?

Singstar, delicious meal, beers, hit the town, kebab, throw up in your own bed, singstar.

Thanks for taking your time guys! It’s been a pleasure guys. Cheers!

Cheers man! BIG LOVE to The Postie x

Interview mit Vuvuvultures

0

Let’s start with a quick introduction of Vuvuvultures! How would you describe yourself as a band?

54247We’re a four-piece rock band from London with a deep love of electronic music, good grooves and loud noises.

You released your first album ‘’Push/ Pull’’ this summer (2013), Congrats ! And apparently you describe your music genre as ‘’ The sound of dirty eating microchips’’. What’s the story behind this crazy Metaphor?

There may be a missing noun from that sentence! I think we were trying to describe the welding together of more traditional ‘band’ sounds with electronic influences – in a chaotic but enjoyable way.

The opener of  ‘’ Push/ Pull’’ which is called ‘’Ctrl Alt Mexicans’’ has an intriguing Title. I’m curious, why this Title and what is it about?

That one was named after a noise sample that was spawned in the dark recesses of our studio. There’s plenty more where that came from! Basically it sounded like we fed our laptop a burrito.

The term ‘’Goth’’ is often referred to Vuvuvultures. Is this reference relevant to you?

No, we find it quite confusing. Your parents might think we’re goth but really we just wear a lot of black as it stays clean for longer. We use some dark imagery, and some of our songs are a little on the dramatic side. That might be why people use the term – in the absence of a better adjective. But we’ve certainly never aimed to be part of any particular scene. We have some cross-over appeal, but goth is not a word we would use to describe ourselves.  Maybe it’s because we were all born in tropical countries and now we live with grey skies. We used to wear colour!

You often play shows in London and people are never bored about them because each show is fully different and special ! Could you tell me more about it ? Which show was the craziest you had until now?

One of our favourites was our most recent one at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen. It was hugely gratifying to see such a big crowd come to see us there, along with our friends Slaves and Skinny Girl Diet. One reviewer said our logo looked like a sign from a seedy sex motel on a dark winter’s night. There was smoke everywhere and the sweat was flying. Good times!

Which song on your album do you think is the most powerful in terms of lyrics and sound of course? (this one is for each member of the band)

Matt: I have always identified really strongly with The Strangler. It’s a dark little tale, filled with malice!

Nicole: My favourite lyrically at the moment is Tell No One, it’s also got a pretty intense pulse through the whole thing, nice drum groove, mexican guitar line and a loop that makes me think of Dr. Dre. Full marks!

You created a drum machine, like artists created ‘’Installations’’, out of debris ! You called it ‘’ Itchy’’ ( Cute Name) ! Why is it so special ? What about  your ‘’ Unsound’’?

“Itchy” was fun to make. It’s nice to have an idea in your head and try bring it into reality. It’s something that really appeals to us all in the way we live our lives. I’m not sure what you mean by ‘unsound’ although if it’s reference to our sanity we probably do bat for that team.

Your sound evolves to a song while jamming and making ‘’noise’’ all together with your instruments ! But what are your musical influences ? Which genre of music do you guys listen to?

We like a lot of 70’s music, Sabbath, Zeppelin, The Doors we also cross over on bands like The Pixies and Portishead. We all have quite different tastes in music so it can be quite a challenge to cross over at times but that’s why song writing always remains entertaining for us. Bit like Will Smith fighting Jim Morrison with Nintendo guns.

What is the best which has been written until now? (for each member of the band)

I think for all of us the song we have written most recently at the time usually feels like the best. A lot of the songs on our album were written years ago and we’re excited to have it out there and move onto fresh songs now.

Which band would you dream and hope to go on tour with?

Existing options, probably Pixies, Portishead, Death Grips, The Cure… There’s so many great artists out there it’s difficult to choose!

According to you, who is the best newcomer of 2013?

He isn’t a new comer but one of the most exciting albums for (Nicole and Paul) this year was “Immunity” by Jon Hopkins.

What are your plans for the future ? Will we see Vuvuvultures in Luxembourg or at any music festival in 2014?

I certainly hope so! We plan to go to as many festivals and countries as we can next year as well as write a lot of new music.

Last but not least, what would you call a perfect Friday night?

Nicole: Drinking red wine with a drum machine and some instruments under moonlight on a WARM beach. I have done it once before and so far it has been the best.

Interview mit Young Rebel Set

0

Hallo Young Rebel Set, wie geht’s? How about a quick introduction of you and your band?

DSC_9344We are Chris, Luke, Matt, Mark and myself and we make up Young Rebel Set, a band from a small town in North East England.

Does your Hometown Stockton-On-Tees have any impact on your music? You often get compared to some sort of „Working Class Heroes“. What do you think about that?

Stockton has a very working-class mentality and I guess some of that rubs off on our music but that’s not something we directly write about. We don’t particularly preach about class or politics or anything, that’s not really our field of expertise as we just like to write and play music. We’re not that concerned about being pigeon-holed as ‘working class whatevers’, it’s just another term people use to categorise the band.

What do you think about the fact that you’re so popular in Germany?

We’re very flattered and obviously grateful. We’ve worked hard to be in a position where we can come over to Germany and know we’ll be playing in front of ‘x’ amount of people and it’s great for us to get that response and have the effect on people that they believe in us and, in these tough times, spend their hard-earned cash to come see us live.

What are, in your opinion, the differences between the German and British music cultures?

There’s so many different sides to these things that it’s rather difficult to draw comparisons. The culture of music is different wherever you go and no ONE culture, or scene, is better than the other. We’re just grateful that the German music culture has embraced us with such warmth and sincerity.

Let’s talk about your new album „Crocodile“, which is a great piece of work!

Vielen dank. It’s nice to hear you like it. The process was tough-going at times and we can’t begin to explain the hard work and sacrifice that went in to making it but we’re all extremely happy with what we’ve produced.

Do you have any favourite songs on the album?

It changes all the time and really depends on what I’m doing or what mood I’m in but I’m extremely proud of every song on the album. They all developed so differently from their initial inception that they still sound so fresh every time I listen.

Could you name any artists or musicians who influence your sound?

Each member of the band has a different opinion of influence than an other. So, I guess there’s a bit The Beatles in there. Some Simon & Garfunkel. A hint of Bob Dylan. A smidgeon of The Hollies. Maybe a borrowed Arctic Monkeys sound or two. A Motown beat here and there. As you say, it’s more about taking influence from, as opposed to replicating, an element of song-writing.

What are, in your opinion, the main differences between your first album „Curse Our Love“ and „Crocodile“?

Curse Our Love was born from necessity. We’d recorded so many good songs over a 3 year period that we sort of just lumped the best ones together and blindly released them collectively as a record. Crocodile, on the other hand, is a real collection of work. It is a musical-document of around about a 12 month period of our lives that depicts everything that went on in our worlds. I feel the main difference between the two records predominantly is the sound. We’ve always written in a particular style and, in the past, never thought much about how to do ourselves justice with the sound we create but nowadays we’re more conscious of how we replicate live what we create in the studio. It’s more thoughtful these days.

The video to the first single from the album was shot in Germany, right? What’s the story behind that video?

We shot ‘The Lash Of The Whip’ video in Cologne. We fell in love with the brief the director sent over; the idea of replicating scenes from ‘Trainspotting’ and it worked perfectly. It’s a great film and is very fitting to the lyrical content so we were over the moon with the way it turned out. We had the Oscars knocking on the door for a couple of our performances there.

What’s your favourite release so far this year?

We’re big fans of the new Arctic Monkeys record. It’s a very accomplished album from a band at the height of their ability. The new Frightened Rabbit record is top-notch as well.

You’ve recently been touring with Sportfreunde Stiller. Could you tell us more about it?

That was so much fun. They’re great guys and we got on like a house on fire. We’d not really heard their stuff before so it was quite refreshing to get to tour with a band who you don’t have any expectation of but we had a great time, the shows were fantastic and the reaction of the audience to our music was brilliant.

You’ve been touring a lot the last few years. Do you have any favourite memories? Any funny anecdotes?

There are really too many to mention. Every day on tour there is something new. The best memories are always of the gigs though. We’ve played at some amazing places over the past few years that I don’t think I could even begin to make a proper list and rank them in any order but long may it continue.

Let’s talk about something completely different. I bet that you’re into football, am i right? If yes, what’s your fav’ team then?

Bang on the money. The majority of us support Middlesbrough FC who are currently languishing pathetically mid-table one league below the Premiership. However, we’ve just recruited a new manager so things are looking up… we hope.

Well guys, i’ve a very last question and it’s a quite personal one… What’d you call a perfect friday night?

It’s incredibly boring nowadays: Finish at the rehearsal room. A few beers at our local. Head home to our loved ones. Consume some terribly unhealthy food. Catch up with our manager. Then off to bed. Nothing overly fancy these days I’m afraid.

Thank you so much for taking your time! I really appreciate it. See you very soon.

Hope to see you soon. Take care.

Andrew.
