Francopop wie damals in den Neunzigern
Es war kein leichtes Unterfangen, Ricky Hollywoods bürgerlichen Namen herauszufinden. Der Franzose will wohl seine Identität wahren, daher nennen wir ihn hier nur SB. Unter seinem Pseudonym ist er überaus produktiv, neben einer Handvoll Singles, einer EP und einer Compilation namens Mes meilleurs succès d’estime 2002-2010 saß er schon bei Bands wie La Féline oder Melody’s Echo Chamber hinter dem Schlagzeug und hat Schülern beigebracht, wie man Electropop Songs schreibt.
Inzwischen ist SB bei Gonzaï Records angekommen, dem Label des gleichnamigen französischen Musikmagazins. Seine 90s-Electro-Chansons sind so underground, dass er sie mitunter auf Kassetten veröffentlicht. Wenn er nicht gerade mit den Jungs von Tahiti 80 abhängt, werkelt er an seinem ersten richtigen Album, das sich, soviel konnten wir herausfinden, unter anderem mit der Frage „Was ist Kunst?“ beschäftigt und voller synthetischer Streicher sein wird. Gesungen wird natürlich auf Französisch, wie sich das für den Synthpop-Untergrund Frankreichs gehört. Sogar auf dem Cover von „Falling“, dem Lied von Julee Cruise, das als Titelsong von Twin Peaks Kultstatus erlangte. Eine treffendere Parallele zu Ricky Hollywoods Musik als jene Serie gibt es nicht.

It was no easy task to find out Ricky Hollywood’s real name. The frenchman wants to safeguard his identity, so we’ll be calling him SB from now on. Under his pseudonym he’s exceedingly productive, in addition to a handful of singles, an EP and a compilation with the name Mes meilleurs succès d’estime 2002-2010, he’s also played drums with bands like La Féline and Melody’s Echo Chamber, and has taught school kids how to write electro-pop songs.
In the meantime, SB has been signed by Gonzaï Records, the label owned by a French music magazine of the same name. His 90s electro chansons are so underground that once in a while he’ll release them on cassette tapes. If he’s not hanging out with the guys from Tahiti 80, he’s working on his first proper album, which, as far as we know, deals with the question “What is art?” among others, and will be full of synthetic strings. Of course it will be sung in french, which goes well with underground French synth-pop – even the cover of “Falling”, a song by Julee Cruise that reached cult status as the theme song of Twin Peaks, and there’s no better series than that to accompany Ricky Hollywood’s music.
