Interview mit Coasts

Hi guys! How about a quick introduction of the band?

We’re Coasts, from Bristol and we’ve been together for about 2 years now. Chris is the singer, Liam the guitarist, James the bass player, Ben the drummer and me, David, the keyboard player.

How did you get started? What’s the story behind the name „Coasts“?

We all met at university in Bath and had been in a few different bands around there before moving to Bristol and forming Coasts. We were searching for a name for quite a while and we had a few different ones before settling on Coasts. We wanted something simple as well as something that summed up the summery, tropical vibe.

How would you describe your sound in a few words? Who does the songwriting?

Tropical-Guitar Pop I guess. Because we’re not all living together at the moment Liam writes the songs, sends them to Chris who does the lyrics and then we all get together in the studio to flesh them out and finish them off as a full band. It seems to work well for us at the moment.

I refer your sound to words like, summer, seagulls, and anything else which has to do with the beach! How does these words and your Hometown fit together? What’s the city like?

Bristol doesn’t have a beach unfortunately, it’s just on a river. It’s a cool city though and is really vibrant with culture and music and things to do. It’s a really good city to live in at the moment.

Let’s keep the beach idea up! What’s your favourite holiday location?

I’ve never been but I’ve always quite fancied going to the South of France, so I’ll go with that.

You’ve recently released a new single called „Stay“. I really love that song, it’s kinda emotional, right? What’s the story behind that song?

„Stay“ was actually the first song we ever wrote as Coasts and we stopped playing it live for a while before giving it a revamp and recording it. You’d have to ask Chris what it’s really about, but I like the juxtaposition between the upbeat tropical feel and the more emotional lyrics.

Few days ago a follower of The Postie said that it’s a shame that you still haven’t released a proper album. What do you think about the idea of releasing one?

We’re going to be releasing one next year and are recording the bulk of it in February, I think. We’ve actually already recorded 2 songs for it, but we’re really excited to get it all down.

What’s your favourite release oft the year so far?

Probably Local Natives – Hummingbird.

Let’s talk about less serious things. What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

Chris once fell over and knocked over the keyboards on a tiny stage in Bristol. I think we all thought he’d passed out or gone a bit Ian Curtis but he’d tripped on a lead.

The next question is a tough one. If you had one day to spend with an Artist, who would it be?

Maybe Ian Curtis to ask him to think twice about going through with it.

What are your musical guilty pleasures? (we all have one.)

We’ve all got a lot of guilty pleasures in this band, the music in the van is pretty eclectic; you quite often hear stuff like 1D, Calvin Harris, 90’s house. We listen to a lot of bad music in fairness. Chris hates it.

Lastly, what would you call a perfect friday night?

Probably some good food, then a play a gig before going out to a club afterwards. So, tour basically.
